It was while at Brooklyn College in 1991, that contemporary artist, John Walker, kept repeating to me: "Groat, you need to learn how to touch the canvas with sensitivity, caress the paint sensitively. Study the work of John Constable, and notice how he paints a "box of air"...there's nothing self-conscious about the manner in which he "touches the surface with the brush" ...At arms length, the painting must dissolve into pure abstraction. For this is the touchstone of great painting, study Rembrandt, Titian, Goya, Turner...painting is about the "mark" of the arist. The "mark" of the artist is what is sublime, the motion of the brush is what has the capacity to transcend the objective world, and move into what is spiritual. At this point in history, Antonio Lopez Garcia is one artist that comes to mind. He has this gift. Lucian Freud also has it.
